March 8:Over 1,500 Kashmiri youths turned up to appear in physical test for 30 General Duty (GD) soldier posts in Jammu and Kashmir Light Infantry (JKLI), a defence ministry spokesman said here today.
Colonel N N Joshi said youths from Shopian and Srinagar districts gathered at the Territorial Battalion (TA) based at Old Air Field, Rengreth on outskirts of Srinagar City, where Army conducted first phase of recruitment rally for the candidates at JKLI Centre yesterday.
In a clear reflection of the desire of the local youth to don the Olive Greens, over 1,500 candidates turned up collectively from both the districts to participate in the rally and all were given an opportunity to appear in the physical tests. Joint security arrangements were made by the unit and Budgam police keeping in view the large representation in the last years recruitment rally conducted by the unit.
Two Deputy Superintendents from district Headquarters, Budgam, three SHOs and over 50 police personnel were deployed at the rally site alongwith the Army for the smooth conduct of the rally. Col Joshi said the rallies for recruitment into all categories of the army will be held in Sunjuwan in Jammu, Bandipora in Kashmir and Drass in Ladakh in the coming months.
The tentative dates for Sunjuwan recruitment rally for candidates from all districts are April 2 to April 18. At Bandipora, the rally is planned from July 11 to 18 for all districts except Leh and Kargil for which it has been scheduled from August 22 to 25 August at Drass. The Army offers a lifetime opportunity of adventure, education, progression besides dignity and self-esteem to a soldier as also to his family. The overwhelming response to the rally is but a reaffirmation of the Kashmiri youths growing aspirations to embrace the noble profession, he said.
