As many as 18 security force personnel, including three senior police officers, were injured when militants hurled a grenade in south Kashmir district of Pulwama.
Official sources here today said militants lobbed a grenade near Degree college in Pulwama at a security force party, resulting in injuries to eight Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), 10 policemen, including Additional Superintendent of Police Azhar Baba, Deputy Superintendent of Police Shafiq Ahmad and Station House Officer (SHO) Adil Ahmad.
All the injured were rushed to a hospital, they said, adding the militants had managed to escape after the attack.
However, additional security forces have been rushed to cordon off the area and launch a search operation.
Earlier in the day, security forces opened fire and burst teargas shells to foil a pro-freedom rally in Pulwama where people defied restrictions and tried to march towards the venue of the rally at Pirchoo. One youth Amir Bashir was killed while over a dozen other protesters were injured in the action.
