Five militants were killed and two soldiers were injured in a gunfight between militants and security forces in north Kashmir’s frontier Kupwara district on Saturday.
The gunfight erupted in Check Drugmulla, Kupwara, nearly 100 km from Srinagar, on Saturday morning when joint teams of the Army, CRPF and police cordoned off the village and started searches. “Five militants were killed in the in the gunfight. They are all foreigners. Two Army men were also injured in the gunfight,” defence sources said. Five weapons were also recovered.
The identity of the militants is being established, and the search operation is still under way. The area was cordoned off on Friday night. The gun battle erupted on Saturday after the militants fired at security forces conducting searches in the area.
“We had an input after which an operation was launched in the village,” a police officer in north Kashmir said. Additional forces were rushed to the area to ensure that militants don’t manage to break the cordon, he added.
