Abhay Deol, who plays a Pakistani in the upcoming film ‘Happy Bhag Jayegi’, had no trouble picking up Urdu. Though his character Bilal is a foreign-educated, Lahore-based urban Pakistani, it was a prerequisite for the character to be well-versed in the language. For actors who had to speak Urdu in the film, a special tutor was brought on set to help them with the language. Interestingly, Abhay managed to learn Urdu without any assistance from the tutor. His director Mudassar Aziz did help him polish his accent but Abhay managed rather well by himself. The actor tells us, “Luckily, I’d learnt Urdu when I was 18. I took classes for nine months to get the pronunciations right. Be it Urdu, Hindi or Marathi, Mudassar’s command over languages is incredible. He would explain the meanings of the words that I didn’t know.”
