After the Ice Cricket Tournament at St. Moritz in Switzerland, which featured former cricketers like Virender Sehwag and Shahid Afridi, Kashmir is all set to host its first cricket match on snow. Jammu and Kashmir captain Parvez Rasool and Bangladesh cricketer Anamul Haque Bijoy will feature in the one-off ice cricket match at famous tourist destination Pahalgam on February 15. Khan International Sports (KIS), an international cricket goods brand of J&K, is organising the ice cricket match along with the Tourism Department.
As per the organisers, Anamul Haque will lead Valley Professionals team, while as Rasool will be in charge of Valley Legends. “Bijoy has given us his confirmation. He will be leading the team against our very own star cricketer Parvez Rasool’s team,” director KIS Firdous Khan said.
“Though we are yet to confirm all players for the match, but it will be mixture of outside and Kashmir based cricketers,” Khan added.
The exhibition match is going to be a 6-A-Side game and Khan said he got the inspiration from last year’s Ice Cricket Tournament in Switzerland. “Last year similar ice cricket tournament of international level was held in Switzerland. I got inspired by that and wanted to conduct similar event in Kashmir. I floated the idea and got positive feedback from some cricketers including Haque and Parvez,” said Khan.
“We don’t want any loophole before the main event. We want it to be a regular feature of international standard here. It will help local tourism industry during winter months, and also will give our cricketers a chance to play cricket throughout year,”Khan further said.
Meanwhile, Rasool believes that the tournament will keep youngsters involved with the game. “I am looking forward to be a part of the event. It is the good idea to keep youngsters involved with the game in a fun way,” said Rasool.
Anamul Haque last represented Bangladesh in an ODI in West Indies in July 2018. He was part of the Comilla Victorians side that won the BPL 2019 title by defeating Dhaka Dynamites in the final recently. In 14 matches for the Victorians, Anamul Haque managed to score 200 runs.
