ANC decries ‘power crisis’ in Jammu

The Awami National Conference (ANC) has accused the state government of failing to initiate measures for brining the power sector in the state back on track. Taking serious note of “power crisis” prevailing in Jammu region, ANC Provincial President, Gian Singh has sought immediate intervention of the Chief Minister to avert the crisis and provide relief to the people of the Jammu region by taking desired steps to deal with power crisis especially in rural areas.

Singh stressed the need for taking urgent steps to improve the power supply by repairing and replacing the damaged transformers in most of the areas. “The repair of transformers in private factories is held up due to payment issues”, he said and stressed that adequate funds be earmarked for the same as erratic power supply is also affecting the water supply in these areas. He said there is need to take steps to provide succor to the people during the scorching heat as everyday there are protests and demonstrations by the people over the power crisis in various parts of Jammu.

Several protest demonstrations across the city have been witnessed over the shortage of power and regular unscheduled power cut in various parts of Jammu city and its adjoining areas due to non-availability of electricity and fake assurance from the Deputy Chief Minister, Dr Nirmal Singh, who also holds the power portfolio. The people question the hollow claims of 24 hours electricity supply to the metered areas, which are also experiencing heavy unscheduled power curtailments. The state government is hiking power tariff after every few months but are unable to provide electricity which is adding to the sufferings of people in the state. The government’s decision of increasing power tariff is bereft of logic and rationale as the power department is yet to improve power supply position both in the urban and rural area, Singh maintained.”
