Awareness camp on drug abuse, illicit trafficking organised

Awareness on International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking given to general public, para medical students, and staff of CHC Akhnoor by Dr Rakesh Verma, Consultant Physician; Kamal Lal, CHO and Dr Vinod Kumar, Block Medical officer, Akhnoor. This day is celebrated in whole of the world on June 26 as “International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking”. United Nation General Assembly established this Day in December 1987 ( International Conference on Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking ) to raise awareness of the harm caused by illicit drugs and to help prevent people profiting from their use.
The Theme for 2016 is: Listen First. “Listen First” is an initiative to increase support for prevention of drug use that is based on science and is thus an effective investment in the well-being of children and youth, their families and their communities. Drug addiction is a preventable disease. Prevention programs involving families, schools, communities, and the media are effective in reducing drug abuse. Although many events and cultural factors affect drug abuse trends, when youths perceive drug abuse as harmful, they reduce their drug taking. Thus, education and outreach are key in helping youth and the general public understands the risks of drug abuse. Teachers, parents, and medical and public health professionals must keep sending the message that drug addiction can be prevented if one never abuses drugs.
The whole programme was conducted under the supervision of Dr. Vinod Kumar, Block Medical officer, Akhnoor.
