Basit needs to pack up

Dear Editor,

Since Pakistan High Commissioner Abdul Basit has assumed his duties, he is in limelight for issuing controversial statement, defeating the very purpose of an ambassador’s duties to narrow gap between both countries and bring closure to each other.

Basit’s action indicates that either he is acting at the behest of his Army boss or he is having anti-India mindset which is not desirable. Every time, he is triggering a fresh controversy. Sometimes, he organizes tea party for separatist leaders of Kashmir despite strong exception by Indian government and extends full support in their struggle, a move which was not done by earlier High Commissioner of Pakistan.

Recently in a dramatic media conference on Thursday, Pakistan High Commissioner Abdul Basit has said that according to him the peace process between India and Pakistan at present is suspended. He also remains elusive on whether a team from the NIA would be allowed to visit Pakistan to probe Pathankote attack which took place earlier this year.

It may be mentioned here that in March, Pakistan Joint Investigation Team was in India to probe the attack, after which reports suggest that NIA could go to the neighbouring for its investigation. All these developments reflects that he is a spoiler rather than to bring close to both countries. It is desirable that either Abdul Basit should mend his ways or pack up and give chance to other High Commissioner to bring peace process on track.
