Business community wants abolishment of toll on goods in J&K but govt is still silent on it: Raman Bhalla

Newspoint Bureau
Jammu Tawi, July 9
The existence of the toll at Lakhanpur, Jammu Tawi Railway Station, Udhampur Railway Station, Lower Munda in Kashmir and Upshi in Ladakh is against the theory of one nation, one tax, on which the GST was introduced in the country, if the toll exists after the implementation of the GST in the state,” said former minister and senior Congress leader Raman Bhalla while reacting over threat of Jammu traders protest over the issue. Former minister stated this while interacting with prominent persons at Narwal Bala and Kashipur Ashram at Gadigarh. Prominent persons present on the occasion include Sarpanch Kasturi Lal, Sarpanch Amrit Bali,Manohar Lal.
The business community wants the implementation of the GST in the state and the abolishment of toll on goods in Jammu and Kashmir. But the government is still silent on abolishing toll,” he added. With the much awaited Goods and Services Tax (GST) system now in place, consumers across the country are left wondering its impact on their lives. Some items are going to get cheaper, some more expensive while prices for certain services might also fluctuate. The prices of milk, bread, fresh fruits and vegetables, etc. have been raised. Ghee, Cold drinks, Chocolate, Packaged chicken, Butter, Ayurvedic medicines, biscuits, Branded rice, Cell phone bill, Insurance premiums, Bank services, credit card services have become costly.
He said the retention of toll tax at Lakhanpur will automatically sky-rocketed the prices of commodities of common use. However he welcomed presidential notification issued for implementation of GST in the State but he vehemently criticized State Govt. for imposing the burden of double taxation on goods hampering the business interests of business community.
Expressing dismay over the stoppage of Shri Amarnath Yatra, former Minister blamed BJP-PDP government for its complete failure to provide security cover to Amarnath Yatra in the Kashmir valley.
“Government notwithstanding the apprehensions aired by security agencies that terror groups are planning to disturb the Amarnath Yatra to create fear psychosis among devotees, utterly failed to make adequate arrangements to ensure an incident-free Yatra this year”, he said.
He claimed that BJP leaders in government have not been able to seriously ponder over the issue of Amarnath Yatris well before its start and utterly failed to create conducive conditions for smooth Yatra this year. Bhalla appealed to Government that simply holding high level meetings and issuing appeals to hooligans to maintain calm in Kashmir is not going to help unless the ground situation is handled taking requisite measures properly. Worst type of situation prevailed in Jammu during the past 24 hours due to failure of
government and divisional administration to regulate and ensure trouble-free
Amarnath yatra.
