Describing union government’s decision backing Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti’s call for ceasefire in the state during Ramzan as appreciable, Jammu and Kashmir People’s Democratic Party (PDP) leader from Jammu West Puneet Singh Jamwal said that this shows Centre’s magnanimity. The decision, he said will while help people observe Ramzan in a peaceful environment it will also give peace a chance.
Puneet Singh Jamwal said this ceasefire is repeat of former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee’s government decision taken on November 19, 2000 that was followed by another ceasefire at the LoC with Pakistan in November 2003. These ceasefires had helped commoners and especially those living close to borders. He said by toning down security operations the centre has shown great generosity that will go a long way in getting international recognition.
Late Chief Minister Mufti Sayeed had always favored talks over proactive approach. Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti, he added wants peace to prevail in the state by all means and it was towards this end that she favored ceasefire. If this ceasefire generates good results then Centre can even extend it further to ensure peace and tranquility in J&K State.
Ramadan is the holy month for the world’s nearly 1.5 billion Muslims, many of whom practice the ritual of dawn-to-dusk fasting and prayers and it’s a healthy sign that Jammu and Kashmir during this time will not see any bloodshed. The PDP leader added that all policies and programmes of collision government in the state are aimed at giving people especially youth an honorable life and they must cease such opportunities in a big way to enhance their socio-economic statuses.
