The International Heritage Day was observed by the Centre for Studies in Museology, University of Jammu, here today. Addressing the scholars, students, staff and some prominent persons, the founding Head of the Department, Museology, Prof. Poonam Chaudhary underscored the importance of this day for protecting and preserving our rich cultural heritage and showcasing our ancient famous monuments in this part of the country. She spoke at length on this year’s theme ‘Cultural Heritage and Sustainable Tourism’ and pointed out that pilgrim- tourism is very vital to the economy of Jammu and Kashmir State. So, she pleaded that it is all the more essential to properly preserve, publicize and showcase our proud cultural heritage. Keeping in line with the theme of the day, Sheikh Noor -ud-din Noorani Museum of Heritage, a University Museum as a part of its outreach programme under the direction of Centre for Studies in Museology organized a one day interactive programme to promote the diverse cultural facets and arts of the people of the state along with Heritage Tourism. Prof. Poonam Chaudhary was the first to start the Centre for Studies in Museology in University of Jammu since January 28, 2008. The centre is now making steady march forward with a larger number of students and scholars undertaking research works in the field of Museology and Heritage. At present there are nearly 10 scholars doing M.Phil as well as original Ph. D projects.
