Cold wave intensifies; Srinagar, Leh, Pahalgam record coldest nights of season

The cold wave has further intensified in Kashmir valley and Ladakh region as the mercury dipped below sub-zero temperature in almost all parts of the region including summer capital, Srinagar, world famous health resort of Pahalgam and Leh, which recorded the coldest nights of the season so far at minus 0.9, minus degree celsius 3.7 and minus 8.5 degree respectively.
Qazigund, also known as  Kashmir, and Kupwara in north Kashmir also recorded the coldest night of the season so far after the mercury plunged and settled at minus 1.8 degree and minus 1.6 degree respectively.
Even though sun was out in Kashmir valley, including Srinagar, icy cold winds continued. A Met department spokesperson said here this afternoon that weather will remain dry in Jammu and Kashmir during the next five days. This will however, result in further drop in the minimum temperature.
He said Leh in Ladakh region recorded the coldest night of the season so far after the mercury further dipped and settled at minus 8.5 degree, against minus 7.1 degree. The border town of Kargil also witnessed a dip in the night temperature due to open skies. Kargil with minus 7.2 degree was the second coldest place in the region after Leh. Yesterday, the temperature recorded in this border town was minus 6.6 degree. The coldest night of the season so far recorded in Kargil was on November 22 after the mercury settled at minus 7.3 degree.
Srinagar recorded the coldest night of the season so far when the mercury dropped and settled at minus 0.9 degree, about a notch below normal. Though sun came out in the summer capital, icy cold winds also continued. The temperature recorded yesterday was minus 0.5 degree.
The minimum temperature will drop further due to open skies, the Met spokesperson said.
Mainly clear sky and the maximum and minimum temperature would be around 15 degree and minus one degree respectively tomorrow in the city, he said.
The world famous health resort of Pahalgam also witnessed the coldest night of the season so far after the mercury dipped and settled at minus 3.7 degree, against minus 3.5 degree recorded yesterday.
Qazigund also recorded the coldest night of the season so far after the mercury plunged and settled at minus 1.8 degree, against minus 0.8 degree recorded yesterday. The spokesperson said that the world famous ski resort of Gulmarg witnessed some improvement, but it was still the coldest place in Kashmir valley. Against minus 4.6 degree recorded yesterday, it was minus 3.8 degree. Kupwara in north Kashmir also witnessed the coldest night of the season so far after the mercury dipped and settled at minus 1.6 degree, against minus 1.1 degree recorded yesterday. Meanwhile, another health resort of Kokernag also witnessed a plunge in the night temperature though it was the only place in the region where the mercury was above freezing point. Against 0.8 degree recorded yesterday, it was 0.4 degree
