CS visits Chenani-Nashri Tunnel

Chief Secretary, J&K Braj Raj Sharma today chaired a review meeting to take stock of the various ongoing construction works of the prestigious Chenani- Nashri tunnel at Chenani. The Chief Secretary also inspected various developmental works related to the four laning of Srinagar-Jammu National Highway at Samroli.
Divisional Commissioner Dr Pawan Kotwal, Commissioner Secretary to Government PW (R&B) Department Rohit Kansal, , DDC Udhampur Niraj Kumar, DDC Ramban Mohammad Aijaz, ADC Udhampur Angrez Singh Ran ,Regional Officer and Vice President IL&FS Ashutosh Chandwar were also present on the occasion.
During the meeting, the Chief Secretary reviewed the status of various works related to Power System, Tunnel lighting, Tunnel Ventilation System, Fire Fighting system, Communication System, Integrated Tunnel Control System, Toll collection system and Electrical Switchyard.
Speaking on the occasion, the CS said that this tunnel is one of its kind and will provide better connectivity besides reducing the distance between Jammu and Srinagar by 31 km and the time of journey by 2 hours.
He further asked the authorities to encourage skill development and employment generation for the socio-economic upliftment of the locals.. Stressing on the security arrangements, he directed the concerned authorities to make fool-proof
security arrangements.
The CS also emphasized on the concerned authorities to speed up the process of completion of the tunnel.
Earlier, the Regional Head gave a detailed power point presentation highlighting
the salient features of the Chenani -Nashri Tunnel Project. He informed that the project started on 23 May 2011 and latest construction equipments such as Dumpers, jumbos, excavators and ventilation ducts have been utilized for the construction of tunnel. Focus has been laid on the structural verification of the ventilation, drainage system for the rock mass inflow as well as the platform water and installation of ribs and correct position of the framework prior to final lining concreting, the Regional Head added.
The meeting was also informed that the tunnel consists of a main tunnel and an escape tunnel(emergency tunnel) which is connected to later by a cross passage. An Integrated Tunnel Control System has also been established which will monitor the Traffic Control, CCTV, Access Control, Fire alarm, Power supply, Communication, Tunnel Lighting, Toll and other systems.The Regional Head further disclosed that it was the first time that a Gas Based Insulation system has been used in a tunnel project.
The prestigious project would be completed by December 10, he added.
Among others, SSP Ramban Randeep Kumar, SE R&B circle Doda Des Raj, Ex-Ens R&B Udhampur and Ramban Project Director NHAI M.A Harde Project Director (IL &FS) Chenani Nashri tunnel project, JS Rathore and other district officers were also present
