CSSS holds training workshop on community based rehabilitation

In persuasion of its mission to reach out to the persons with special needs and to build expertise that can contribute towards mainstreaming of such people in the society, Catholic Social Service Society (CSSS) of J&K organised a two-day training cum orientation workshop on community-based rehabilitation at Sevaniketan, Jammu.
The training facilitated
by expert team from Hope Disability Centre, Kashmir imparted knowledge to participants on early identification, preve ntion, referral, and entitlements/schemes for persons with disabilities.
The workshop helped in clarifying several myths on disability and highlighted the importance of emphasising the abilities of such people rather than focusing on their disabilities.
On the first first day of training, the team focused
on clarifying the general understanding of definition and types of disabilities besides stages of life during which one person can acquire disability. A special session on rights and entitlements helped participants to
understand various programmes undertaken by by the government for the care and welfare of persons with disabilities.
On the second day of workshop, the facilitators engaged with the participants in clarifying concepts in Community Based Rehabilitation (CBR) and how this approach could help in effectively integrating persons with disabilities into the community. As a result, the team worked out a detailed CBR intervention plan for the project areas of Jammu.
Commenting on the success of the workshop, Fr Shaiju Chacko, the Director of CSSS, which is involved in institutional as well as home-based care of children for more than a decade, expressed hope that the training imparted to the staff will help the organization to work efficaciously towards CBR as a sustainable and successful alternative for providing holistic care to the specially-abled people.
The expert team from Hope Disability Centre comprised of Shabir Rather, Asrar and Imran Khan who have extensive experience in outreach activities in several districts of J&K particularly Kupwara, Poonch and Rajouri.
The workshop organised in association with Jan Vikas Samiti, Varanasi was well attended by coordinators and staff of CSSS besides staff from Sahara Special School, Trikuta Nagar and St. John’s Rehabilitation Centre, Mandal.
