Cultural Academy pays tributes to late Sofi Ghulam Mohammed

J&K Academy of Art, Culture & Languages Monday paid rich tributes to the legendary journalist, Sofi Ghulam Mohammed at Palace Auditorium, Hotel Shahenshah here. An impressive function was organised to observe the 5th death anniversary of Sofi Ghulam Mohammed which was attended by a galaxy of his admirers congregating at the venue.

Highlighting the contribution of the late journalist to Urdu journalism in Kashmir, speakers said that among the journalists of Kashmir of the modern era, Sofi stands out as a leading journalist who wrote critical essays on myriad social issues of serious import. Noted jurist and member, State Accountability Commission, Justice Bashir Ahmad Kirmani (Rtd) presided over the function while former member legislative assembly, Nizamudin Bhat was the chief guest. Noted broadcaster, Farooq Nazki was the guest of honour. Secretary Academy, Dr. Aziz Hajini, and Bashir Ahmad Bashir were also in the presidium. As part of the death anniversary two extensive  papers were read by Ghulam Nabi Khayal, and Nazir Fida in which various facets of Sofi’s life were highlighted.

Describing the late journalist as a bold voice, Secretary Academy, Dr. Aziz Hajini said that the adroitness of Sofi and his take on social issues made him enormously popular among the masses. “Sofi saheb brought Urdu journalism closer to the people of Kashmir and placed it at par with its counterparts in other parts of India”, Hajini said.

Among others Nizamudin Bhat, Bashir Ahmad Kirmani and Farooq Nazki also spoke on the occasion. People in large numbers including Shujaat Bukhari, Shafiq Qureshi, Mushtaq Ahmad Mushtaq and Mohammed Amin Bhat attended the function.
