The Centre for Women’s Studies (CWS), University of Jammu organized the inaugural lecture under the banner of thematic series on gender issues which was delivered by Prof. R. Mahalakshmi of Centre for Historical Studies, School of Social Sciences, Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi. The lecture started with a welcome note by Prof. Suman Jamwal, Director, and Centre for women’s Studies who also spoke about rationale aims and objective of launching the lecture series on themes relating to women. In this context she brought about the points of how scholars working on gender studies, cutting across their disciplinary boundaries have, over time, generated a body of heterogeneous corpus of knowledge on various aspects of women. This body of knowledge, however, needs to be effectively disseminated. The lecture series, therefore, is just a medium to take the informed knowledge to wider audience. She also pointed out that that all the lectures under this series, will represent the quality of research and thinking that all scholars and students working on gender studies, irrespective of their discipline, must measure up to. She also stated categorically that each lecture would be converted into a standalone monograph. She concluded on the optimistic note that, academic endeavor such as these, may contribute to creating a situation ,when women, some days, will not only share the same space as other gender in academic discourse and discussion but would also moves from margin to the centre of policy and planning.
