Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti deserves kudos for demanding inclusion of Srinagar and Jammu among smart cities. This shows that she is committed to equitable development of all regions of the state and wants to run coalition government without any cracks.
Had she raised demand of Srinagar only then it may not go down well to its allied partner and above all to the people of Jammu region thus creating resentment among all section of city. According to the document released on smart cities, the city would be equipped with all core infrastructure while no city from J&K figure in the list of first 98 cities short listed by expert committee constituted by Union Ministry of Urban Development.
Out of 98 cities, 20 cities have been selected in first phase. These 20 cities will be the first to receive the funds, thus kick starting the process of developing them into small cities. Non-inclusion of city from J&K may be due to not meeting yardstick laid down by Urban Ministry.
If we let the decision on the part of central government obviously it would take considerable time for inclusion of city of J&K in Smart Cities list. Demand of smart city is one of main demand of CM before and after taking over charge. It is due to that very reason that she has rushed to Delhi and met several Ministers including Prime Minister, urging for inclusion of two cities in Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) among other demands.
According to her, J&K deserve special attention being different and peculiar circumstances here than other states. We hope that central would consider her demand and announce soon inclusion of Srinagar and Jammu in smart cities list.
