Prof. Rajnish Arora and Prof. Vandana Lunyal, Directors of English Foreign Language University (EFLU), Lucknow Campus and Regional Institute of English (RIE), Chandigarh respectively, delivered lectures on Critical Language Awareness and Uncovering Ideology in Gender Stereotypes during Two Week Summer School-cum-FDP, organized by the School of Languages & Literature, SMVD University. Both of them employed an interactive approach of lectures by teaching through the deconstruction of the ideology behind advertisements.
Prof. Arora focused upon developing language awareness through reflective approach in learning. He discussed how Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) discovers social meanings through language tools such as passivization, nominalization, modality and presupposition.
Prof. Lunyal deliberated upon the hidden agendas as well as obvious operational mindsets behind the construction and setting of advertisements. She emphasized that these kinds of media practices involve themselves in maintaining stereotypes for the successful consumption and marketing of their product.
Further, Prof. Arora was awarded British Council Hornby Scholarship in the University of Lancaster and was a Visiting Fellow in the Center for Applied Linguistics in the University of Warwick, while Prof. Lunyal was a recipient of AS Hornby Longterm British Council Scholarship from the University of Warwick and was selected to represent India in a three week leadership programme at the University of Maryland Baltimore County, US.
