District Climbing meet on May 5

The 17th Jammu District Sport Climbing Championship shall be organized by Mountaineering Association of J&K (MAJK) in collaboration with Sprawling Buds School, Bantalab, here on May five.
The Jammu district competition shall be followed by Udhampur, Reasi and Samba district sport climbing competitions on the following dates.
About 200 climbers from various institutions of Jammu district are likely to vie for honors in the competition which may extend to the second day on May six in case the competitions are not completed on the first day.
The competitions to be conducted on the pre fabricated 40ft high Tenzing Norgay Sport Climbing Wall in Sprawling Buds school premises shall be held in eight categories of men, women (born in 2000, 1999 and earlier), boys, girls (born in 2001, 2002 and 2003); sub junior boys, girls (born in 2004 and 2005) and mini boys/girls (born in 2006 and after). Whereas men, women, boys and girls shall compete both in ‘Lead climbing’ and ‘Speed climbing’ sub junior boys/girls and mini boys and girls shall participate in ‘Lead climbing’ only.

On the spot registration shall also be done at Sprawling Buds School from 7.30 am to 8 am on May five. National and zonal medal winners as well as reigning state champions in all the categories are, however, exempted from registration fee. Whereas Shawetica Khajuria, a qualified national judge in sport climbing shall be the president of the jury of the competition, Sonam Sidharth is the organising secretary. However, technical and logistic support shall be provided by Indian Mountaineering Foundation (IMF) North Zone Committee, New Delhi. The championship has been sponsored by J&K State Sports Council.
It is worth mentioning here that Sport Climbing is now an Olympic discipline and accordingly has been included in the 18th Asian Games scheduled to be organized at Jakarta and Palembang in Indonesia from August 18 to September two, 2018. As such MAJK has been assiduously preparing its sport climbers for the last over six months for the Olympic and Asian Games as well as for other international competitions. The efforts have bore fruit with one J&K climber Shivani Charak being selected in the Indian team for the World Cup in Bouldering scheduled to be organized at Navi Mumbai from June23 to June 24, 2017. The Association hopes to have another climber along with Shivani Charak in the Indian team for the Asian Games.
