The Election Commission today said it is examining representations by Opposition parties objecting to presentation of the Union Budget on February 1, three days before the commencement of Assembly elections to the five states.Addressing a press conference here to announce dates for the Assembly polls in Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Uttarakhand, Goa and Manipur, Chief Election Commissioner Nasim Zaidi said, ”The Election Commission is examining whether it is ok for the Government to present the Union Budget on February 1. We are examining representation by the Opposition parties.”The Election Commission today announced dates for the Assembly polls in five states of Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Uttarakhand, Goa and Manipur.While polling for the Goa and Punjab state assemblies is scheduled to be held on February 4, the polling for the Uttarakhand Assembly will be held on February 15. Manipur will go to polls in two phases on March 4 and March 8 while Assembly elections for 403 seats in Uttar Pradesh will be held in seven phases – First phase will be held on February 11, second on February 15, third on February 19, fourth on February 23 , fifth on February 27, sixth on March 4, and seventh on March 8.
Uttarakhand will also have single-phase polling on February 15 for 70 seats, notification for which will be issued on January 20 and nominations can be filed by January 27. Scrutiny of papers will be held on January 28 and nominations can be withdrawn by January 30.
Goa will also go to polling in one go on February 4 for 40 seats.Notification will be issued on January 11 and the last date for filing nominations was Janauary 18. Scrutiny will be held on January 19 and withdrawal of names can be done by January 21. Manipur will go to polls in two phases. Polling for the first phase will be held on March four for 38 seats, for which notification will come out on February 8 and the last date for nominations was Feberuary 15.
Papers will be scrutinized on February 16 and withdrawals can be made by February 18. The second phase of polling will be held on March 8 for 22 seats.Notification will be issued on February 11, and nominations can be filed by Februray 18 while scrutiny will take place on February 20 and the last date for withdrawing nomations was February 22. The term of the Assemblies in Goa, Manipur, Punjab is expiring on March 18, while the term of the Uttarakhand Assembly is going to be completed on March 26 and of UP Assembly on May 27. The elections involve 690 Assembly seats and over 16 crore voters. The Model Code of Conduct has come into force with the announcement of elections, Zaidi said.
