Awami Itihaad Party MLA Engineer Rashid had a narrow escape after he was attacked by some people in border Rajouri district on Saturday.
Sources said that Rashid was on way from Jammu to Kalakote and then to Rajouri town at that time. However, when his vehicle reached Bhamla, some people raising pro India slogans attacked his vehicle. They were protesting over Rashid’s taking out procession in the Valley in support of pro-Afzal demonstrators in JNU.
The assailants allegedly broke the window panes and wind screen of the vehicle and also threw ink on him. The MLA, however, was rescued by police personnel.
As incident led to traffic jam on the busy road, police resorted to lathicharge to disperse the protesters injuring some of them. One of the injured was rushed to the hospital in view of gracious injury in the head.
Engineer Rashid, however, said that he was going to meet the family of one Ishtiaq Ahmed killed by a VDC member at Kalakote and then to attend a conference in Rajouri. He accused police of engineering the attack on him, saying that the assailants were already waiting for his vehicle there. “I am now returning to Jammu,” he added.
This has been the second attack on him since during the last nearly six months as he was earlier attacked near Bhaderwah in Doda in the wake of beef ban controversy. There also, ink was thrown on him, and his vehicle damaged, but he was rescued by police.
