Alleging state government agricultural policies responsible for the hardships of farmers, Border Kissan Union staged protest in front of Marheen Tehsil Office under the leadership of national Conference District Secretary Dharam Pal Kundal and President Shiv Dev Singh on Tuesday.
Miffed over the lackadaisical attitude of government and concerning departments the protesting farmers warned to launch a series of agitations, if the governments failed to settle the claims and redressal of demands of the farmers.
Miffed over the governments’ policies concerning agriculture National Conference Block President Dharam Pal Kundal said that they are making farmers to face a number of different hardships. The farmers are quite worried and are tense as far as the process of surveying the damaged crops. He added that neither the revenue officers nor the agriculture department has visited this area. Moreover, many times farmers suffer of natural calamities but government never bothers to give helping hand to farmers. “The Crop Insurance Scheme of the government is still an illusion for the farmers”, he rued.
Shiv Dev Singh while addressing the gathering demanded settling of compensation of farmers who had lost their crops during last two years due to bad weather conditions. In addition, he also demanded of adequate insurance scheme for their crops and supply of seeds /fertilizers on time and introducing wheat procurement centers at comfortable points. He also said that though many farmers in the state especially of Kathua farmers, are required to join the insurance scheme expecting that their crops would be protected against climatic vagaries and related diseases.
Thuru Ram, Kuldeep Singh, Ranjeet Singh, Ram Dass Saini, Naib Sarpanch Chabeel Singh, Anoop Bandral, Makhni Bandral, Kaku Ram, Karan Singh, Satpal Singh, Akshay Kumar, and many others were among the protesters.
Later, farmers handed over demand charter to Tehsildar Jetinder Singh.
