March 22: If you’ve watched season 5 of Game of Thrones, then a few character deaths may have come as a shock to you.
Jon Snow’s death in the finale may have sent fans into a tizzy but the death of Shireen Baratheon also came as a shock to viewers. In one of the more horrific scenes from the show, Shireen was burnt alive on a stake by Stannis at the behest of the Red Priestess Melisandre to pay tribute to the Lord of Light.
One of the reasons Shireen’s death was unexpected was because her character is still alive in the books. Now author George RR Martin has seemingly confirmed that the death was planned for the books as well. In the Blu-ray release of season 5, Martin says that it was always his intention to have Stannis sacrifice Shireen. This means it’s possible we’ll see this scene in the Winds of Winter as well.
Season 5 of Game of Thrones is when the show began to diverge from the books. But Martin has been in talks with the showrunners to guide the direction they take the narrative as both the show and the books are meant to converge towards the same end.
Till then, expect more such bombshells book lovers!
