Gandhiji’s teachings being devalued: Congress

Congress workers

Congress workers led by Hari Singh Chib, District President (Rural Jammu) and Mohinder Kumar Bhardwaj, Member AICC held a protest rally at Majua (Bishnah) against devaluation of Gandhian values and arrest of Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi.

Holding protest rally on Gandhi Jayanti, Senior Congress leader Mohinder Bhardwaj has said that Gandhi Jayanti is being celebrated this year with heavy heart and remorse as the values for which Mahatma Gandhi stood and fought for have been devalued just on the eve when we were all gearing to celebrate the occasion and remember his teachings. The brutal gang rape of a poor, innocent Dalit woman in Hathras and similar deplorable incidents reported from other places of Uttar Pradesh with the local government either standing a mute spectator or colluding to hush up the cases is a grim reminder that how those in governance though remember Gandhiji for political reasons but are devaluing his teachings.

Addressing the party workers here today to mark the birth anniversaries of Mahatma Gandhi and former Prime Minister, Lal Bahadur Shastri, which was presided over by Congress’ Jammu (rural) president, Hari Singh Chib, he said Gandhi Ji sacrificed his life for freedom of the country and upholding democratic values and Shastri Ji followed his foot-steps, but it is utterly shameful that the Central Government and its off-shoot UP dispensation led by Yogi Aditya Nath have murdered these democratic values. “It is shameful the manner in which the Yogi administration dealt with the former president of Congress Rahul Gandhi and AICC general secretary Mrs Priyanka Gandhi Vadra in an attempt to stop them from going to Hathras to meet the victim’s family and share their grief. It is a broad daylight attempt to gag the premier opposition party which is the only party fighting against the autocratic designs of the current dispensation,” he said.

Bhardwaj said that Gandhiji had all through his life worked for the welfare of the downtrodden and upliftment of the Dalits and fought against untouchability. “We are seeing all round repression against them and the manner in which the case of Hathras rape victim was dealt clearly smacks of attempts to divide the society on caste lines rather than dispensing speedy justice. Why has not Mr Modi or the Home Minister, Mr Amit Shah till now condemned the incident, he asked? This clearly shows the mindset at work.
