Gauri Shinde rubbishes rumours of ‘Dear Zindagi’ being inspired by Canadian TV show

Mumbai, December 6
Shah Rukh Khan and Alia Bhatt starrer ‘Dear Zindagi’ is winning acclaim from critics as well as ruling the box-office. However, amidst the praises coming its way, Gauri Shinde’s coming-of-age film has also found its share of detractors. Rumours are abuzz that ‘Dear Zindagi’ is inspired by a Canadian show, ‘Being Erica’. Parallels are being drawn between Alia’s character Kaira and the protagonist of the TV series Erica (played by Erin Karpluck). However, in a recent interview to a daily, Gauri took these allegations head-on. On being asked about the similarities, the director said that she has not watched the TV show in question. Stating that this is just an attempt to malign ‘Dear Zindagi’, she said that people are never happy with others’ success and hence resort to these tricks to bring a film down. Gauri further added that the audience should watch the film and the TV series and then decide for themselves.
There are other similarities besides those between Alia’s character and Erica. Interestingly, much like Alia’s character who visits therapist Dr. Jehangir Khan (Shah Rukh’s character), Erica too is shown to visit Dr. Tom. Kaira’s boyfriends played by Angad Bedi and Ali Zafar can reportedly be found in the series as well. One can apparently find similarities between Angad’s character and Erica’s ‘too good to be dumped’ boyfriend Ethan, while Ali Zafar’s character bears resemblance to Kai, who is shown as a musician in the series.
