New Delhi, December 19
The government is seriously considering creation of a dedicated intelligence wing for the Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB). Home Minister Rajnath Singh today said the proposal was before him and he would give it a serious consideration.
Speaking as chief guest at the 53rd raising day function of the SSB, the Home Minister lauded the role of the border security agency, and agreeing with the view that it needed more teeth, said,” I will discuss the proposal with my colleagues in detail.” He also noted that proper infrastructure for women in SSB was lacking, Mr Singh also assured them that a gender-friendly environment for their posting on the border would be created.
He, however, said the SSB had done some good work for women empowerment but more needed to be done.
The Home Minister also lauded the SSB’s work in curbing human and drug trafficking. The SSB was created in 1963 after the 1962 war with China as it was realised that in the event of any external aggression, backing and resolute will of the border population was a must.
Its aim was ‘Total security preparedness’ in the remote border areas for performing a ‘stay-behind’ role in the event of a war. Working of any force in border villages required an in-depth understanding and familiarity of the terrain and also their cultural ethos.
SSB wings were created in North Assam, North Bengal, hill districts of Uttar Pradesh (now Uttarakhand), Himachal Pradesh, part of Punjab and Ladakh area
of J&K.
