Harmful mercury in face-creams for ‘fairness’

Dear Editor,
It refers to shocking media-reports indicating that Delhi Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences and Research (DIPSR), an undertaking of Government of Delhi affiliated to University of Delhi, has determined that facial creams advertising for bringing fairness contain excessive quantity of mercury which is very harmful for kidney and lever apart from causing other harms to human body.
India ranks second in the world after Nigeria in use of facial cream for increasing fairness. While fifty-percent of Indian population is misled by advertisements of fairness through facial creams, as much as sevent-seven percent Nigerians try for fairness in face-colour through such facial creams without realizing the harm caused by these creams.
Once harmful facial-creams are banned, Indian public will have no choice other than to leave craze for having fair faces. Unfortunately matrimonial advertisements reveal that people by and large prefer fair-coloured brides! Indian government has agencies like Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) for certifying food-products fit for consumption authorizing the certified products to use its ‘fssai’ logo. Likewise some agency should be there to certify cosmetics and toiletries fit to be used without causing harm to human body.
Certified cosmetics and toiletries then may be allowed to use logo of the certifying government-agency. Till central government establishes any such agency, DIPSAR may be authorized to certify cosmetics and toiletries.
