High street markets shut down ahead of Republic Day celebrations

Heavy security has been deployed in the run-up for the 67th Republic Day celebrations where French President Francoise Hollande is the chief guest. In a first, almost 1000 traffic cops have been given weapons as an added measure. In an unprecedented move and another first, most of the markets in the capital were mandated to shut down, and some were even sealed, a day before the celebrations.

Karol Baug and Daryaganj, two of more popular markets in North Delhi were completely shut. Devraj Baveja, General Secretary of the Executives of Federation of Sadar Bazar Traders Association (Regd.) stated “Daryaganj was completely shut down and even the locks were sealed. We see security measures before Republic days, but this was unusual.” In South Delhi, at the market in Sarojini Nagar, double the number of personnel from Border Security Force (BSF) were deployed. “In a first, since the past five days, the shopkeepers have deployed 60 of their own volunteers to assist the Delhi Police in maintaining law and order,” claimed Pramod Sharma, President, Sarojini Market Shopkeepers Association.
