Srinagar, December 12
The national highway, connecting Ladakh region with Kashmir valley, remained closed for the second day today due to slipper road conditions following snowfall.
Meanwhile, the Srinagar-Jammu national highway, linking the Kashmir valley with the rest of the country and historic Mujhal road, connecting Shopian in south Kashmir with Rajouri and Poonch in Jammu region remained through despite rain.
A traffic police official said that the highway remained closed for the second today due to slippery road conditions.
He said the Border Roads Organisation (BRO), responsible for the maintainance of the highway, has pressed into service sophisticated machines and men on work and removed snow. However, due to below freezing temperature during the night, traffic could not be allowed as the road has become very slippery, he said adding vehicles will be allowed only when there is improvement in the weather.
Meanwhile, large number of vehicles remained stranded on both sides of the Zojila pass.
In the past the highway was being closed in the month of November for six winter months. However, forhe past few years the highway remained open till there was heavy snowfall.
