Four persons, including husband-wife duo, died while three others were injured, four of them critically, after a van they were travelling on met with an accident on Srinagar-Jammu highway near Banihal on Tuesday.
Witnesses said that the van heading towards Banihal skidded off the highway near Rattanbass – 2 km from Banihal – and rolled down into a 300-ft deep gorge.
Three persons including Mohammad Ayoub, his wife Parveena Begum, resident of Sarbagni in Ramsoo and the driver of the van, identified as Shabir Ahmad of Thachi Banihal died on the spot.
Another critically injured woman, identified as Parveena, wife of Parvez Ahmad Khan, resident of Chamalwas, succumbed to her injuries at Jawahar Tunnel.
All three critically injured passengers were shifted to Srinagar for advanced treatment, said an official.
