Intense cold grips J&K

Kashmir valley was under intense cold wave today with maximum day temperature in most of the places dipping several notches below normal and the night temperature recorded below freezing.
The summer capital Srinagar recorded a maximum of 5.1 degree Celsius and minimum of minus 3.2 degree Celsius. The maximum temperature in Srinagar remained four degrees below normal.
The intense cold wave across Kashmir led to partial freezing of almost all the water bodies including fringes of Dal lake. In Kashmir valley icy winds were blowing across with Sun remaining behind dark clouds. People were shivering with cold and mostly stayed indoors.
The minimum temperature in Qazigund was recorded at minus 4.0 degree Celsius and maximum temperature at 5.8 degree Celsius.
Pahalgam recorded minus 4.4 as minimum temperature and maximum 3.2 degree Celsius.
The ski resort of Gulmarg was shivering at minus 5.7 degree Celsius during night and day temperature was recorded at 0.5 degree Celsius.
Kupwara recorded minimum temperature of minus 3.0 degree Celsius while the maximum day temperature settled at 2.9 degree Celsius.
Leh in Ladakh recorded a minimum temperature of minus 10.1 degree Celsius while the day temperature settled at degree Celsius 0.8 degree Celsius.
Kargil recorded a minimum temperature of minus 9.0 degree Celsius while the day temperature settled at degree Celsius 0.6 degree Celsius.
The impact of Kashmir’s Chillai Kalan was also felt in Jammu region as well. The winter capital recorded minimum of 5 degree Celsius, three notches below normal. The day temperature settled at 15. 4 degree Celsius, which is five degree below normal.
A MeT department official said that there is forecast of isolated rain or snow across the State during the next 24 hours. He said that maximum temperatures in Srinagar and Jammu cities are likely to hover around 4 and 16 degrees Celsius respectively.
The Mughal road remained closed today for the fourth day due to slippery road conditions while the highway, connecting the Kashmir valley with the rest of the country was through for both ways with some restrictions. Srinagar-Leh highway is already closed for winter.
