When the controversy over NIT issue today entered day 8th, various social, political and educational organsiations condemned the incident and demanded action against the miscreants, besides revocation of FIR against non-Kashmiri students.
Ishfaq ur Rehman Poswal, BJP leader and national executive member ST Morcha today urged civil society to come forward and help in resolving the prevailing unrest at NIT. Poswal regretted that such unrest in an institute like NIT could affect tourism industry, restoration of peace and a huge economic package of Rs 80000crore meant for the development of Jammu and Kashmir.
“It is indeed a very sad incident that has pitted students against each other barely for their support for a sports and cricket teams. I urge civil society to come forward and help in resolving the crisis at an earliest so that peace restores in the institute and normal class work resumes,” said Poswal.
“Establishment of ambitious projects like AIIMS could be affected due to such unrest. How can AIIMS be set up when an institute is witnessing uproar for past over a week,” he added. Poswal regretted the claims of a NIT girl student who had claimed that some students threatened to rape her to scare the outstation students leave the NIT. “Kashmir is valley of Sufis and saints and there is a need for every one to restore its sanctity by contributing in curbing such incidents. Civil society should not only condemn it but come forward to resolve the crisis,” Poswal added.
Hitting out at Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leadership in the State as well as Centre over NIT issue, State President, Shri Ram Sena, Jammu and Kashmir, Rajiv Mahajan said, “If the BJP has any shame left, they should immediately revoke FIR being lodged by the Jammu and Kashmir Police against non-local students to pre-empt the enquiry constituted by the State authorities against them.
It is pertinent to mention here that Jammu and Kashmir police has invoked sections 148 (rioting), 149 (unlawful assembly), 427 (mischief), 336 (endangering life of others), 323 (voluntarily causing hurt), sections 353 (assault on public servant) and 188 (disobedience to order duly promulgated by public servant) of the Ranbir Penal Code (RPC) against non-local students. Rajiv said that anti-national elements want to destroy the peaceful atmosphere of the State by indulging in such violence and police lodge FIR against non-lacal students who unfurled National Flag and chanting Bharat Mata Ki Jai in the campus. He also said that the parents of many students were deeply shocked and felt insecure for the safety of their children studying at NIT and sought security for them.
Rajiv Mahajan also took a dig on Chamber of Commerce and Industries Jammu asking that where is CCI whose 24-hour ultimatum to government to take action against anti-national elements has been proved hollow by BJP. Commerce and Industries (CCI) on Wednesday in the press conference gave 24 hours ultimatum to government seeking concrete steps to ensure safety of the non-local students in the NIT campus.
Sr. Vice President and Former Minister -Sham Lal Sharma today alleged that PDP-BJP government has again turned out to be a complete failure in all fronts, let it be the question of good Governance or bringing peace to the Valley. Situations have only worsened from the day PDP-BJP government has been formed.
Sharma, while addressing workers meet at Akhnoor said that the state of affairs which have taken place recently in NIT Srinagar and it’s inept handling by the BJP-PDP government exposed double standard of the Jammu based party.
He expressed his unhappiness over the registration of FIR against 20 ‘innocent’ students thereby depriving them of their Fundamental Rights.
This clearly shows that BJP has different standards for different institutions, for JNU they have showed one standard and for NIT the different one. The BJP has thus compromised with their ideology for their vested interests. Sham Lal condemned the recent incident which had taken place in NIT Srinagar.
The students of other community were mercilessly beaten up by the local police and the BJP-PDP government is acting like a mute spectator. He also said that the anti national elements that have been underground have become very active and are indulging in anti national activities from the day the present government BJP PDP has taken the reins of the state in the past as well as now.
Sham expressed his concern over the rising trend of antinational activities. He further said those who are unfurling National flag and raising National slogans are being Harassed and are living under the threat .The government has utterly failed in providing security to these students. He said that students were brutally baton charged in the campus whereas police clearly denies the fact and says “they were compelled to use mild force on the students trying to move out on the main road “.This is the very first gift given by the PDP-BJP government to the people of J&K. BJP is thrusting slogan of Bharat Mata Ki JAI on others but while taking oath none of the BJP Ministers had ever raised this slogan,” he added.
The activists of ABVP today expressed concern over lathicharge on non-Kashmir students at NIT and demanded immediate revocation of the FIR that has been lodged against the nationalist students of NIT Srinagar.
Addressing a press conference, Varsha Jandial demanded safe and secure NIT campus where Prime focus should be given on the security of non local students and demanded immediate action on the Police officials as well as the NIT authorities who committed such brutalities. She also said that ABVP will stage Mahadharna on Monday in support of the non-local students of the NIT.
She further said, “MHRD should appoint a Nodal Commission at all educational institutes of valley where grievances of non-local students be taken care of”.
Yuva Rajput Sabha (YRS) today held a protest demonstration against the incident took place at Srinagar NIT with the non Kashmiri students.
The protest was led by Surinder Singh Gilli, President YRS. Addressing the gathering, Gilli said that J&K is the integral part of Hindustan but here in J&K now it is an offence to say Bharat Mata ki jai. “NIT is the best example for this as some of the non Kashmiri students when raised slogans were beaten up by JKP,” he said and added that the Govt at Center should think about the proper security of the Non Kashmiri Students.
The members of Movement for Peace, Equality & Justice (MPEJ), have condemned the Lathi-charge on non-local students at NIT Srinagar by J&K police and termed it as barbaric & undemocratic. They have appealed to Mehbooba Mufti-coalition government to take a stern action against the police officials & also those, who are responsible for polluting the peaceful atmosphere of NIT Campus by indulging in anti-national activities.
The situation created in the NIT appears to have been properly organized at a very high level, which needs to be immediately taken stock of by going deep into its roots to identify its perpetrators and deal with them with an iron hand so as to nip the evil in the bud. They also demanded that the security of the students should be tightened as they are getting threats from some of the locals and the college staff.
They also urged the students of National Institute of Technology (NIT) Srinagar/ other Educational Institutions’ in the country not to fall prey to vested interests and enemies of peace and instead focus on their studies. Students should be free from politics, religion, or caste. The students should not have been any affiliation with any political parties; they should only high light the problems of the students only and should not fall prey to politicians who are creator of this divide & rule politics and are responsible for all types of problems being confronted in the country. Institutions are not meant to create this type of atmosphere against the sovereignty, security, integrity of the country. Student has no religion, region or caste but only the politicians have created this atmosphere for their personal interest.
Meanwhile, J&K BJP State Spokesperson, Prof. Virender Gupta, strongly condemned the misconceived action of lodging FIR against the non-local students of NIT, Srinagar, under sections 148 (rioting), 14 (unlawful assembly), that was within the campus, 427 (mischief), 336 (endangering life of others), 323 (voluntarily causing hurt) and 353 (assault of public servant) of the Ranbir Panel Code. He said that the state police, deployed in the institution that committed heinous crime by executing unprovoked brutal lathi-charge and tear-gas shells on the students, not sparing the girls and those in the hostels, thus inflicting serious injuries on some of them, is trying to pre-empt the enquiry constituted by the state authorities against the police action in the campus. “What action has the state police, posted in the campus, initiated against the locals who raised anti India, Pro-Pak and Pro-Azadi slogans and who were threatening the non-locals, in particular the girls students” Prof. Virender asked and he demanded an impartial Judicial enquiry into the whole episode.
Prof Virender Gupta strongly criticized Former Chief Minister Omar Abdullah’s statement of objecting to the deployment of central forces inside the NIT campus, bringing special teams from HRD and taking things out of proportions. He charged Omar of playing negative and destructive politics, after being out of power in the state. He added that the statement shows his insensitiveness to the gravity of the situation that emerged in NIT Srinagar campus.
