Strategic Jammu-Srinagar national highway was closed today due to landslides in Kheari area of the highway in Udhampur district, a senior police official said in Jammu.
“Overnight rains triggered landslides at a number of places of Kheari area on the Jammu-Srinagar national highway which has been closed for traffic.”Several vehicles are stranded in the landslide hit area of the highway. Efforts are on to clear the highway,” the official said.
“Men and machinery employed in building the Chenani tunnel on the highway have also been pressed into service to clear the highway,” he added. “Intending passengers are advised not to undertake a journey before contacting traffic police control rooms in Jammu and Srinagar,” the official said. The 300 km long highway is the lifeline for supplies to the landlocked Kashmir Valley. All essentials of life are routed to the valley through this highway.
