Business and other activities once again resumed as markets and roads witnessed heavy rush of shoppers and vehicles following relaxation in strike by separatists from 1600 hrs today to 0800 hrs tomorrow in Kashmir valley.
However, business and other activities were closed in the valley since yesterday after markets were abuzz due to relaxation in strike for three days from Saturday.
Meanwhile, markets around historic Jamia Masjid, where Friday prayers were offered December 9 for the third successive week after 19 weeks, witnessed heavy rush of shoppers this evening. Good a number of vehicles were plying on all routes since early morning in Kashmir valley though public and private transport witnessed an increase in the evening, resulting in traffic jams on some routes in the city, where traffic police personnel were on their toes to maintain smooth traffic movement.However, life remained crippled in south Kashmir district of Anantnag, where a militant was killed in an encounter with security forces early this morning.
Both the factions of the Hurriyat Conference (HC) and Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF), spearheading the agitation since July 9, have asked people to do normal business today from 1600 hrs to 0800 hrs tomorrow.
The separatists had giving full day relaxation in strike for three days from Saturday for the first time since July 9. In the previous three weeks, there was relaxation only over the weekends. The separatists have, however, extended the strike till December 15. Srinagar once again came alive in the evening today as shops and business establishments reopened and traffic was plying on all routes though there were frequent traffic jams on some busy routes. All roads leading to Maisuma near here witnessed heavy rush of vehicles and pedestrians. Shops and business establishment in Maisuma are also functioning normally since this evening in view of the relaxation in strike.
Majority of shops are open in the main business hubs in civil lines, including historic Lal Chowk, Hari Singh High Street, Gonikhan, Residency Road, Maulana Azad Road, Mahraj Bazar, Batmaloo, Iqbal Park, Dalgate, Regal Chowk and Budshah Chowk.
