Rizwan Dar (name changed) of kupwara district of north kashmir’s have been suffering from many depression and disorder. He is using visiting Institute of Mental Health and Neuroscience Kashmir from last four years for treatment.
Parents of Rizwan Dar said that “We are very poor people , it is very difficult for us to visit here from kupwara . We are spends nights in hotels with our patient. When we are visiting to this hospital, it becomes very tough to return back in a day.Daily huge rush of patients are visible in Outdoor Patients Departments (OPD) of hospital”.
There are many patients of mental illness and depression, distress in across kashmir, who are still living far flung border areas without any care and help. Mental health care is limited only in Srinagar.
Kashmir over 69 lakh population having alone Government Hospital for mental health care, Institute of Mental Health and Neuroscience Kashmir with only 100 beds for patients.
Officials documents reveal from 1700 patients in 1990s per year, today 51000 patients average visit the out patients department (OPD) of the psychiatric hospital Srinagar. Each year an increase the number of patients.
According to officials statics, Over 5 lakh patients most of them suffering from depression and anxiety disorders, have been treated since 2008 at district level hospitals across Kashmir.
Experts cite conflict as a major contributor in rise of psychiatric illnesses in Kashmir.According to a 2006 study , 15.9 percent population in the valley suffers from post traumatic stress disorder a diseases after associated with conflict.
Alone 100 beds Hospital for mental health care is not enough for whole kashmir.
