The Lal Chand Yamla Foundation organised Honour Ceremonyat Sainik Colony here today, in which a large number of well-respected people hailing from inside and outside the State, participated. The function was presided over by Piara Lal.
The programme commenced with a welcome speech by IDAS Officer (Retd) G.R. Kaith and thereafter, the Foundation honoured R.L. Kaith with ‘Lal Chand Yamla Award’ in a grandiose way for contributing tirelessly in all aspects of community service spanning over three decades. The Foundation also awarded Urmila Devi (pursuing Ph.D. in Biotechnology from University of Nottingham, U.K), KusumChanjotra (pursuing Ph.D. in Punjabi from University of Jammu), RenuBala (who is M.A. Sociology, M.Ed. &UGC NETqualified) for encouraging education among masses of the society, and Vijay Lakhotra for consistently exhibiting excellence in sports.
Addressing the function, the Foundation Chief said, “Lal Chand Yamlawas from Ludhiana and belonged to Chanjotra clan of Batwal Community. He was the doyen of Punjabi Music and first singer that comes to mind who laid foundation of Punjabi music in Indian Punjab. He was widely revered as ‘UstadJi’ among his singer contemporaries and as ‘Yamla’ by his audience. His trademark was his soft strumming of Tumbi and his turban tying style known traditionally as Turla.” “The aim of instituting awards in his name was to give an honourable tribute to him”, Kaith added.
