Srinagar, April 21
Under the supervision of the Joint Controller, a team of officers from the Legal Metrology Department today conducted a surprise inspection of vendors within the premises of the Srinagar Airport. The inspection came in the wake of instructions from the Minister for Food, Civil Supplies & Consumer Affairs, Chowdhary Zulfikar Ali and in pursuance of the directions issued by the Central Government to check the dual Maximum Retail Prices (MRP) of packaged drinking water/soft drinks and other pre-packaged products at the Srinagar Airport.
The Department booked a number of Multi National Companies, including Hindustan Coca-Cola Beverages Pvt. Ltd., Redbul India Pvt. Ltd. and Varun Beverages Ltd., for indulging in double MRPs, selling the same products at higher prices at the Airport than at the open market. The LMD official said that notices are being issued to the MNCs for the offence .
Pertinently, under the Legal Metrology (Packaged Commodities) Rules, 2011, a company/firm cannot print two different MRPs for the same product having the same quantity therein.
