JAMMU, Mar 27
Within a day of meeting Governor N.N.Vohra and staking claim for government formation alongwith BJP’s Deputy Chief Minister designate Dr. Nirmal Singh, PDP President and Chief Minister designate flew back to Srinagar.
Sources told Newspoint Bureau that Mehbooba flew back to gauge mood of party workers besides finalizing issue of portfolio distribution between the two parties. They added that there are still some issues pertaining to portfolio distribution which have to be settled with BJP and once that is done, the two parties shall unanimously decide a date for swearing-in ceremony.
On reaching Srinagar, Mehbooba straightway drove to her residence at Gupkar. She had advised her workers as well as party leaders not to organize any reception at the Srinagar International airport. “Keep it low profile. I don’t want fanfare,” is what Mehbooba had told her loyalists before leaving Jammu Airport for Srinagar. She arrived in the afternoon and told her staff to allow all the visitors one by one.
Apart from visiting Mehbooba, party workers and loyalists told Newspoint Bureau that Member Parliament (MP) from Srinagar Tariq Hameed Qarra’s new found loyalty with the party Chief Mehbooba Mufti despite him being vocal critic of alliance with BJP has brought a sigh of relief in the party rank and file. From ex-Minister to MLAs and MLCs, whosoever talked to Newspoint stated that his return has brought unity in the party and enthused workers as well as leaders.
Old guard within party was overwhelmingly feeling comfortable by Qarra’s return to the camp and added that his involvement in the party affairs would not only strengthen the party but also serve as a bridge between the old and new generation leaders. While referring to the Mehbooba Mufti’s speech in the legislative meet, a senior party leader said that the president acknowledged the stand Qarra had taken.
Party is appreciating Mehbooba Mufti for bringing the flock together. Qarra’s ‘disinterest’ in party affairs from last many months had ‘alienated’ workers in the summer capital but now, when he is back, they have began to feel rejuvenated . He added that the Parliamentarian’s return would bridge the ‘gap’ between the party and workers and would help in redressal of grievances both in the administration and party forum.
The party workers appreciated Mehbooba mufti’s decision to form government and hoped the new government would bring peace and prosperity in the state. Pertinently the Parliament member representing the all important Srinagar-Budgam Constituency in Lok Sabha Tariq Hamid Kara has been in the limelight ever since late mufti Mohammad Sayeed forged alliance with BJP last march, for opposing the alliance.
He even did not attend the coordination committee meeting once during the ten months tenure of Mufti Government. The firebrand leader who has served as Finance Minister in the past has however, emerged as one of the front runners in supporting Party President Mehbooba Mufti in re-stitching alliance with BJP this time around. His open support to the idea of going along with BJP may have surprised many, but according to party sources, has at the same time helped party emerge as a strong and consolidated unit.
