Former chief minister Omar Abdullah Monday came down heavily at Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti after her party asked the Election Commission to postpone the Anantnag by-poll, saying her brother Tassaduq Mufti’s statement is an “indictment of his sister Mehbooba government.”
Omar, who is also NC’s working president took to Twitter to express his views about Tassaduq’s calls for postponing of LS elections for Anantnag seat.
“Tassaduq’s statement is an indictment of his sister Mehbooba Mufti’s government and its abject failure. How can the BJP not see this?” Omar wrote on his Twitter account.
Earlier, PDP member Tassaduq Hussain Mufti appealed to the Election Commission (EC) to postpone the bypolls in Anantnag after 8 people died in the Budgam district on Sunday during clashes between youth and security forces. The party said that the situation is not conducive for holding by-elections. Criticising Mehbooba Mufti, Omar said she should immediately resign as PDP government in the state has failed completely.
Omar said EC is well within its powers to postpone or countermand Anantnag bypoll but if so, Mehbooba Mufti must resign and Governor should take the charge. “PDP’s Tassaduq demands polls to be postponed. Has mainstream completely lost the battle?” read another tweet.
On Sunday, eight civilians were killed and scores were injured in firing by government forces when protesters tried to attack some polling stations. A mere 7% of voter turnout was recorded in the state on Sunday, the lowest in 30 years.
