Like other parts of the state to commemorate Fire Safety Week, a function was organized by Fire and Emergency Services,Bhaderwah today to pay homage to those brave firemen who lost their lives while performing their duties. .Sub Officer Bhaderwah fire and Emergency Zakir Hussain was the chief guest on the occasion .In his address, Sub Officer Bhaderwah Zakir Hussain gave a resume of the activities of his department in whole Bhaderwah area and remembered those Jawans who sacrificed their lives while saving life and properties during fire incidents.
He said April 14, 1944 was the day when a devastating fire incident took place at Victoria Docks in Bombay (now Mumbai), in which hundreds of human beings perished besides causing loss to property worth crores. He said since them April 14 is observed as National Fire Service Day.
He told the public not to misuse fire service telephone numbers as it is a punishable offense, give right and precise information, use appropriate fire extinguishers at the initial stage to contain fire, don’t pour water on oil and electrical fire, inform power department to cut off power line in the locality to avoid further disaster.He said that the motto of the services is “We serve to save” and the role of Fire & Emergency Services, J&K, was earlier confined to Fire Fighting to safeguard life and property. Zakir Hussain informed the public to give way to fire tenders to pass unobstructed, desists from using fire sirens by individuals/organizations and VIPs and other utility services may kindly use their respective sirens, locate the fire incident spot, guide and show fire personnel the shortest possible route, locate sources and supply water at the vicinity of the fire incident, don’t disturb /drag the delivery hose while fire personnel are combating fire, install fire extinguishers, fire alarms, smoke detectors, fire hydrants and sprinkler systems at home.
He said the department has been renamed as Fire & Emergency Services Department as such the nature of duties viz a viz the responsibilities have increased substantially.He said that the department has to attend each and every sort of emergency/ disasters etc. like floods/ flash floods, rescue from water, earthquakes, chemical disasters, gas leakages, road accidents, building collapses, avalanches, forest fires, drought besides manmade disasters like war, air raids, bomb blasts etc.
The Jawans who laid their lives during fire fighting operations were remembered in the function and in their respect the audience stood for a two minutes silence and prayed for their solace.On the occasion, the Jawans of the Fire Services,Bhaderwah demonstrated a mock drill in which latest machinery and equipment was displayed.It informed the public to call and inform fire service immediately as and when fire breaks out and not to feel panic.It also asked every household to maintain a small water tank to meet any fire hazard before fire personnel arrive, kitchen fire/gas, candles, lamps etc. should be properly extinguished when not in use, use certified and standard electrical appliances viz.wires, plugs, fuse, switches, sockets etc and prepare family evacuation plans and have regular mock drills.The fire service week will go on till April 20 and in Bhaderwah seminars , rallies and quiz competitions will also be organised in schools and colleges .
