Though the foundation stone was laid by two different Chief Ministers of different political parties, the much awaited multi-storey parking is yet to start at the ever congested General Bus Stand in the city and is far from reality
For inept, the over 200-Crore project for the “modernisation of the General Bus Stand-cum-multi-level car parking-cum-commercial complex” was proposed in 2010-11 and its foundation stone was laid by the then Chief Minister Omar Abdullah in September 2, 2014. But the work never started and once again the city had witnessed a same impressive function by the state government of laying the foundation stone after an year on October 16, 2015 by the late Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed and ironically the ambitious project yet is far from reality.
According to official sources Jammu Development Authority (JDA) the nodal claimant of Bus Stand Jammu had assured the shopkeepers to provide shops at Inter-State Bus Terminal (ISBT), Narwal but due to delaying in construction 74 shops in ISBT, Narwal, the construction of the mega project-multi levels parking is getting lingered upon.
Sources said estimated the cost of this mega project which is Rs 201.68 crores of which government already had reportedly released Rs 131 crores in favour of JDA (executing agency) and both the Chief Ministers (Omar & Mufti) had announced while laying foundation stone, the construction work would be completed within two years.
“This multi-storey parking is just a dream for the people of Jammu and a photo opportunity for various Chief Ministers, who are just trying to the people of the City in the name of development,” said a transporter at the General Bus Stand, Jammu showing concerns over traffic congestion in hub of city.
As per sources the newly constructed multi storied parking building will accommodate 1300 cars and also provide access corridor to 80 buses and besides one taxi stand. Besides this it will have also house an air-conditioned ticket booking office, waiting hall for the visitors/commuters.
The people of the city who are eagerly waiting for the multi-storey parking so that the traffic problem in the city can be reduced to some extent are disappointed with the delay by the authorities in starting the work.
Unfortunately after the lapse of two years after announcement by the then Chief Minister Omar Abdullah and after lapse of nine months from second ceremony in 2015 and announcement by the then Chief Minister late Mufti Mohd Sayeed the work for the construction of parking is still in doldrums and yet has not initiated by the executing agency.” sources said.
