National conference on Sunday demanded that the farmers whose fruit crops were destroyed due to the hailstorm that lashed many areas of Kulgam district on Saturday be provided compensation by the government for the losses they have suffered.
While advocating relief for these farmers, National Conference Kulgam constituency incharge, Imran Nabi Dar while demanding an on spot assessment of the losses y revenue officials said, “The extent of damage to the orchards here can be gauged from the fact that heavy pellets of hail lashed the crops for twelve long minutes due to which the apple and other orchards have been rendered devastated.”
He urged that areas like Ashmuji, Kanchew, Chakpora, Brazloo and their adjacent areas be visited immediately by the officials to take a stock of the situation.
While justifying the demand for relief to these farmers, Imran said that the BJP-PDP government had earlier announced a waiver for the farmers who had availed KCC loans but were duped because the government had not covered farmers whose loans were more than Rs. 50,000. “Most farmers have taken loans of over Rs. 2 lakh. Government has once again shocked the poor farmers with its hollow promise of a loan waiver,” he said. He added that the hailstorm was sure to deteriorate the financial and living condition of farmers already under the burden of crop losses and loans.
