No clearance on BC Road flyover

The fate of the proposed flyover on the BC Road, connecting the Shakuntla Chowk with Janipur, remains uncertain as  has not started any work on the project so far.The project under the Jammu and Kashmir Urban Sector Development Investment Plan was sanctioned in 2007.The flyover was supposed to connect Shakuntla Chowk-Balwinder Chowk-Ambphalla-New Plot-Janipur with an aim to reduce traffic congestion on this particular stretch.Following public interest litigation (PIL) by the Citizen Forum through its president RK Chadha, a Division Bench of the Jammu and Kashmir High Court recently directed Chief Executive Officer, ERA, to file status report on the project.Though all the roads in the winter capital are witnessing heavy jams these days, this particular stretch is the worst affected.Sources said the project worth Rs 30 crore was approved by the state government in 2007 but due to some unknown reasons the work on it could not be started. They also said Asian Development Bank (ADB) had agreed to fund the project under Trench-I of the Jammu and Kashmir Urban Sector Development Investment Plan.“Traffic on this particular stretch is increasing with every single day, but the government is not taking the issue seriously. So many accidents happen on this stretch but you hardly see deployment of traffic personnel. They are visible only when there is a VIP movement,” claimed Sagar Chand, a Rehari resident.CEO, ERA, Vinod Sharma said the project had not been dropped. When asked about the filing of status report in the High Court, Sharma said: “Yes, we have been given some time by the court to gather records pertaining to the project and we will file the same very soon.”
