A national-level shotput player-turned-gangster was arrested for the murder of a man in May last year.
The accused, Deepak, was a school champion and had participated twice in national-level contests. On May 18, 2015, he and two others had shot dead Amit alias Hoti in Kanjhawala. While the other two were arrested, Deepak managed to escape the police dragnet.
“Police teams had been tracking Deepak for a long time. On Wednesday, we received information that he had been spotted in village Jharoda Kalan, Najafgarh,” said DCP (southwest) Surender Kumar.
During interrogation, Deepak told the police that his cousin Ravi Dagar had told him about Amit threatening to harm him if he didn’t return Rs 10 lakh he had loaned to him. “Dagar plotted with Deepak to kill Amit. They roped in a friend named Bhanja. The trio procured a 9mm and a countrymade pistol,” Kumar said.
The trio went to Kanjhawala in Deepak’s car and shot Amit down.
“Deepak’s poor finances pushed him to crime. He had a gang and was involved in robberies, snatchings and thefts. He was also arrested in 2008 in a carjacking case in Bahadurgarh,” Kumar said.
