Education Minister Naeem Akhter inaugurated the super-50 free coaching initiative in Srinagar today. The minister assured of making it a round-the-year activity. The first coaching centre under the initiative has been set up at Government High School, Hyderpora, where batches of 50 students each from Class X and XII have been accommodated.

The authorities concerned had earlier this year banned private tuitions by government teachers in the Valley.Akhter later announced the free coaching initiative and roped in the government teachers to teach students during vacations. The officials said the teachers would be paid according to their performance. An official from the Education Department said, as a part of the initiative, 50 coaching centers had been started across the Valley.

The official also maintained that the department was planning to make it a round-the-year activity instead of restricting it to winter season alone.“The super 50 free coaching initiative will continue till the syllabus is completed. It’s not restricted to winter vacation only and will be a round-the-year activity,” the official said, adding that they were committed to provide best faculty and facilities to help the students. It is for the first time that such a step has been initiated by the state government.

The initiative was launched by Naeem Akhter on December 12 for the benefit of the student community. The coaching has been started for the students, who have passed their Class IX exams, and Class XI and XII students. The students had to apply online for registration and due to heavy rush of applicants, students of class XII (medical/non-medical) had to go through a screening test in which 125 students had qualified.

Under the initiative, the Education Department will also provide free coaching for medical and engineering entrance examinations, like JKCET, AIIMS, AMU and IIT mains. Director, Education, Kashmir, Shah Faesal said around one lakh students across Kashmir had registered for free tuitions under the initiative, while 1,000 aspirants had been selected to get coaching for entrance examinations.

The authorities have issued the list of schools in all the 10 districts of the Valley where the free coaching can be availed. In Kupwara, nearly 21 government schools have been identified where students can avail the benefit of free coaching. Similarly, in all other districts, more than 10 coaching centers have been established for the benefit of students.“In Srinagar, apart from the main centre in Hyderpora, which is the tuition hub of Srinagar, four more centers have been opened. Also, two centers have been opened in Kargil,” said an official.
