A police officer was suspended on Tuesday a day after a Gujjar protester died in alleged police firing during a protest over an anti-demolition drive in Sarore area of Samba district yesterday.
Station House Officer (SHO) Bari Brahma was suspended and attached to District Police Lines (DPL) Samba until further inquiry, said a senior police officer.
The protester, identified as Muhammad Yaqoob, died after policemen accompanying the Jammu Development Authority (JDA) during an demolition drive, opened fire on the Gujjar protesters.
Meanwhile, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) demanded action against the culprits and appealed to the Governor NN Vohra to investigate the incident at the highest level.
Demanding the rehabilitation of all the homeless people, PDP leader and former Education Minister Naeem Akhtar said that the party was against all encroachments. “…but the action can’t be selective”.
