Police prevent Geelani’s book release function, sealed venue in Srinagar

Srinagar, April 23
Police today prevented book release function of hardline Hurriyat Conference (HC) chairman Syed Ali Shah Geelani by sealing entire area around the venue of the function in Srinagar outskirts. Geelani was to release third volume of book written by him titled “Iqbal-Rohi Deen Ka Shinasa” on Sir Mohammad Iqbal at HC office adjacent his Hyderpora residence today. However, police had put up barricades and closed the road leading to Mr Geelani’s house from Srinagar-Airport main road.
Nobody, even the media persons were allowed to enter the venue of the book release function.
It was simply a book release function and had nothing to do with politics, a spokesman of the HC Aiyaz Akbar said.
He alleged that nobody was even allowed to meet Geelani, who is under house arrest for the past about one year.
We have invited intellectuals, journalists, poets and senior citizens to function which was to be held within the four walls of Mr Geelani’s house, Aiyaz said adding it was unfortunate that even social gatherings were not being allowed by the present government.
He said two volumes of the book have already been released and this was the third edition.
He said large number of security forces and state police personnel have been deployed in the entire area to prevent participants to reach the venue of the book release function.
