Election Commission of India (ECI) today came under sharp criticism for deferring Anantnag assembly by-polls with Congress state president Ghulam Ahmed Mir alleging that the decision was taken to please ruling People’s Democratic Party (PDP).
He castigated Election Commission of India (ECI) for taking the decision over the postponement of polls in Anantnag assembly segment in a jittery and not taking into confidence the opposition political parties of the state. He said this while addressing a press conference at a local hotel here. He maintained that postponing of the polls at Anantnag segment without any reason was unfortunate and was taken while keeping in view the interests of the one particular party.
Mir said that the ECI should have discussed the issue of deferring the polls with all the political parties of the state so that a consensus could have been evolved ahead of making any decision public.
The Congress chief trained guns against the chief minister Mehbooba Mufti, accusing her of denying the right to franchise to the people of Anantnag south Kashmir. “The truth is that she is much scared of facing the people of the state. She has no guts to contest the polls at the present time, keeping in view all the wrong decisions that the party has taken since it entered into the bonhomie with the BJP in Jammu and Kashmir,” Mir said while addressing the newsmen.
He added that when the catastrophic floods wreaked havoc across the state, breaking reed of the state’s economy, it was the PDP that came in the forefront and wanted polls to be announced in Kashmir. Mir said that peoples’ shelters and livelihood was marooned at the time when PDP wanted elections to be held in Kashmir. “If the polls would have been deferred then, that wouldn’t have been wrong but at present what the PDP has done is utterly disgraceful.”
Mir accused the chief minister Mehbooba Mufti of using good offices at the GOI to ensure the polls at Anantnag seat are deferred. “Because it is certain that she will lose the polls terribly. She has actually managed to save herself for the time being from the worst ever defeat of PDP’s history,” said Mir.
