In brazen violation of the High Court directives that Russian poplar trees be chopped down, the administration has miserably failed to act in some parts of Srinagar city while locals from Bilal Colony Zakoora who staged a protest here said that these trees have endangered their lives.
“A day before a poplar tree suddenly fell upon a house, causing massive damage to it. Luckily, no one was present inside the house at the time of mishap,” Sheikh Gulzar, a protester said.
The protesters said that none of the existing Russian poplar trees have been cut down but that the administration has allowed new nurseries to come up.
“We many times approached the authorities and handed over written representations to the concerned but nothing is being done,” they said and demanded immediate chopping of hazardous trees.
Pertinently, the Jammu and Kashmir High Court last year directed all Deputy Commissioners to order immediate removal of poplar trees of Russian species across the Valley in wake of potential threat to human health.
