Punjab bandh impacts several districts

With Sikh organisations calling for ‘Punjab bandh’, several areas of the state were mostly or partly shut down on Thursday. Schools and colleges are closed in several districts including Bathinda, Amritsar, Muktsar, Moga and Faridkot, reported Aaj Tak.

According to the report, the authorities of these schools and colleges decided to shut down as soon as they heard about the call for ‘Punjab bandh’ early in the morning. Most of the students across the state couldn’t be notified about the same and they only became aware of the situation when they came to their schools; many alone and many with their parents.

A day long bandh has been called for to oppose the desecration of Guru Granth Sahib as well as police-violence like firing and lathicharge on Sikhs.

Punjab police has deployed its forces in several areas of the state to ensure law and order during the bandh.

Earlier, Punjab chief minister Prakash Singh Badal announced a reward of Rs one crore for turning in people who were involved in the desecration of Guru Granth Sahib. Badal appealed to the Sikh community to maintain peace and promised to give exemplary punishment to the culprits.

Sikh protestors have been agitating against the same for the last four days. It took an ugly turn on Wednesday when two people were killed and 90 injured including several policemen.
